Washing should clean our clothes – but many conventional detergents leave behind traces we can’t see: microplastics. And these have serious consequences for our environment and our health.

Microplastics in your laundry routine

Microplastics are tiny plastic particles (smaller than 5 mm) that either result from material breakdown or are deliberately added to products – including cosmetics, cleaning agents, and laundry detergents.

According to the Plastic Soup Foundation, more than 100 detergent brands contain synthetic polymers like polyethylene, polyquaternium, or acrylate copolymer. These substances go straight into our wastewater during washing – and stay there.

And what happens then?

These particles flow through rivers into the ocean, are ingested by fish – and eventually end up on our plates via the food chain. Studies show that we consume around 5 grams of microplastics per week – roughly the weight of a credit card.

These particles are anything but harmless. They can cause inflammation, disrupt hormones, and damage cells in the body. This is especially concerning for children and people with sensitive skin.
