WHAT THE LAB TESTS REVEALED
Researchers at the University of Washington tested 25 of the most popular liquid detergents on the market. Every single one contained chemicals never listed on the label.
A separate study from Clemson University found that fabric gains 2% of its weight in chemical residue after just 10 standard washes.
The list of substances detected reads like a hazardous materials report:
1,4-dioxane — classified by the EPA as a probable human carcinogen. A manufacturing byproduct, never required on labels.
Optical brighteners — chemicals designed to deceive the eye. Studies show they can enter the bloodstream through the skin.
Synthetic fragrance compounds — legally hidden under the catch-all term "parfum". Linked to hormone disruption and skin sensitisation.
New York State has already banned detergents containing high levels of 1,4-dioxane. California has filed lawsuits over the same chemical.
In the UK, no such restriction yet exists.
